چکیده
F igure 1 shows the eyes of a 53 year old man who has suffered with severe generalised arthritis for more than 15 years, requiring left knee replacement at the age of 45 years. He has noticed dark urine on several occasions and passed many renal stones. His sister (aged 52 years) also has generalised arthritis especially in the large joints of the lower limbs and the back. In addition, she has been passing dark urine and has dark pigmentation of the cartilage of her ear (fig 2).

SELF ASSESSMENT ANSWERS Pigmented sclera: a diagnostic challenge?
The sister also has alkaptonuria (fig 2; see p 491). Alkaptonuria is an autosomal recessive disorder. Siblings are more likely to suffer from the condition than parents or offspring. Usually there is a history of consanguineous marriage in the parents of affected offspring. However, the parents of the brother and sister reported here were unrelated to each other before marriage and hailed from ...
متن کاملRetraction: Sclera-Choroid-RPE Transport of Eight β-Blockers in Human, Bovine, Porcine, Rabbit, and Rat Models.
PURPOSE To determine the influence of drug lipophilicity, ocular pigmentation, and species differences on transscleral solute transport. METHODS The transport of eight β-blockers across excised sclera/sclera-choroid-RPE (SCRPE) of albino rabbit, pigmented rabbit, human, porcine, and bovine eyes was determined over 6 hours. The ex vivo transscleral β-blocker transport to the vitreous at the en...
متن کاملLocalization of retinoid binding proteins, retinoid receptors, and retinaldehyde dehydrogenase in the chick eye.
Retinoids have many functions in the eye, including, perhaps, the visual guidance of ocular growth. Therefore, we identified where retinoid receptors, binding proteins, and biosynthetic enzymes are located in the ocular tissues of the chick as a step toward discovering where retinoids are generated and where they act. Using antibodies to interphotoreceptor retinoid binding protein (IRBP), cellu...

Nevus of Ota is a condition wherein the typical pattern of the bluish black pigmentation is noticed along with the cutaneous distribution of the trigeminal nerve. This condition is most prevalent in Japanese population but comparatively rare among Indians. We report a case of 23-year-old female presented with unilateral pigmented areas over the skin of forehead, malar area, ear and periorbital ...
متن کاملDisruption of emmetropization and high susceptibility to deprivation myopia in albino guinea pigs.
PURPOSE To compare emmetropization in albino and pigmented guinea pigs. METHODS Distributions of refractive state were examined in 214 albino and 234 pigmented guinea pigs. Albino (A) and pigmented (P) guinea pigs were divided into two groups, hyperopic (H) and myopic (M). Eye development was separately followed in 10 randomly selected animals from each group (AH, AM, PH, PM) from 2 to 10 wee...
